Nominations/Designations

Preservation Services supports individuals and groups for nominating historic properties to the National Register of Historic Places and helps them identify funding sources where available and applicable. In addition, we also help in identifying and researching properties eligible for local designation, and assist local property owners in preparing the appropriate paperwork. Our library has records of properties that are already designated.

Click here for detailed information, instructions and benefits of national and local designations.

How Preservation Services of Historic Ithaca can help:

Nominating your property to the National Register for Historic Places is a process of great discovery. Your knowledge of your property will be greatly expanded as you research its history and recount its story.

A successful nomination:

  • brings recognition of the property as being of local, state or national significance
  • provides protection against state and federally-funded projects which might affect the property’s integrity
  • increases your ability to identify grants and tax incentives toward restoration, rehabilitation and maintenance.

There are many resources available to assist in the nomination process:

The New York State office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (the “SHPO” or State Historic Preservation Office) reviews applications and nominations. Click here for contact information. There is a regional representative for Tompkins County who is available to answer questions and provide guidance.Click here for the latest contact information.

Historic Ithaca can provide assistance in preparing applications and nominations by:

  • providing samples of successful nomination forms for your reference
  • assisting with research in our reference library
  • suggesting methods for historic research that might be undertaken in other collections and agencies
  • inspecting your property to advise on the documentation of alterations made to it over time

Please contact the Director of Preservation Services for more information at (607) 319-4611 or email alphonse@historicithaca.org.
