New summer workshop: Creating floor cloth murals
New Summer Workshop at
Historic Ithaca:
“Creating floor cloth murals”
In July, Historic Ithaca is kicking off a new hands-on workshop series to introduce the new Conservation Lab program. One of the goals of the lab space is to offer classes to those who are interested in acquiring hands-on skills
in preservation — such as plaster repair, re-pointing historic masonry, furniture restoration, wooden window repair, hardware restoration, and more.
The first workshop will teach participants how to create a usable canvas floor cloth mural, with instruction by local artist, Mary Beth Ihnken. Historically, painted canvas floor cloths were pre-linoleum rugs that were widely used
during most of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as a cheaper alternative to woven carpets.
Instructor: Mary Beth Ihnken
Date: Wednesday, July 22 and Wednesday, July 29.
Time: 6:00-8:00pm
Where: Significant Elements architectural salvage warehouse, 212 Center
Street, Ithaca
Cost: $100, includes both sessions and all supplies to create your own 2’ x 3’
floor cloth mural.
Registration: Please call Historic Ithaca (607-273-6633) or email Anne
Turcotte (aft26@cornell.edu) to register for this workshop.
The deadline for registration is July 15th.
